Proud car owners used to spend their Sunday afternoons polishing their pride and joy to gleaming perfection. Nowadays, too many of us only admit that the car needs cleaning when we can no longer see through the windscreen. However, a bit of tender loving care and a regular wash is essential. Dirty windows combined with the low morning and early evening sun that is common in the autumn, can be a great danger to drivers, obscuring visibility and causing accidents.
WINDSCREEN WEAR
Car windscreens are continuously bombarded by small particles such as tiny stones, sand and dirt that cause wear to the surface. Soiling may further contribute to windscreen wear, as the removal of grease and grime results in the windscreen surface being scratched and damaged. A heavy downpour can push the performance of the car windscreen wipers to the limit, resulting in further damage to the screen, as the wipers scratch tiny particles across the surface.
WINDSCREEN COATINGS
Windscreen coatings work by repelling water and preventing adherence of foreign matter to the surface of the screen. Due to the hydrophobic properties of such treatments, dirt particles are picked up by the water droplets as they are shed off the treated surface.
A good quality windscreen treatment can provide durable protection for a car windscreen. It provides an easy to clean surface, allowing removal of dirt, insects etc. without damaging the screen. The ease of cleaning also leads to less use of detergents. The water repellent properties of a windscreen coating offers improved visibility when driving in heavy rain, making driving safer. Furthermore, drivers take longer to adjust their vision following exposure to the stray light effects created through a worn windscreen. An effective windscreen treatment will reduce dazzle and improve vision while driving at night. A lesser point, maybe, but nonetheless important from a cost perspective, is the reduced wear on windscreen wiper blades. Windscreen treatments may also be used to reduce wear on other car windows, glass sunroofs, mirrors and glass headlights.
SAFE DRIVING IN BAD WEATHER
When driving in poor weather, particularly rain or fog, ensure that dipped headlights are used at all times. However, avoid unnecessary use of rear fog lights as this tends to dazzle the driver behind. Slow down and increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front. Be aware of how much longer it takes stop in slippery conditions. Exercise extra caution at junctions, scanning ahead to spot potential hazards. Keep both hands on the steering wheel and both eyes on the road at all times. It is vital that the car is maintained properly for all weather conditions, with regard to battery, antifreeze, wipers, wiper fluid, headlights and tyres. Unless this is the case, everything else, such as car paint tips and windscreen treatments become irrelevant
